If you are over 65 there could now be a flu vaccine with your name on it. Our over 65 flu vaccines have arrived and our service is underway. Anyone can catch the flu and spread it to others. Most people recover within a week but for anyone in the NHS at-risk categories, flu can mean hospitalisation, serious complications such as pneumonia, or can even be life threatening. If you have an underlying health condition, the flu may also make your condition worse.
Symptoms can include fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, extreme fatigue, a dry cough, sore throat and stuffy nose.
How does flu vaccination work?
The flu vaccination triggers your body to make antibodies that help protect you against the influenza virus, and it can take 10 to 14 days for immunity to develop. After this, if you're exposed to the same flu virus your body can recognise and fight it.
You need to have a flu vaccination every year as the antibodies that protect you from the flu decline over time, and flu strains can also change from year to year.
Also if you're in one of the at-risk categories, speak to your healthcare professional today about flu vaccination. You can help protect yourself and those around you in one shot by getting a flu vaccination.
